Ex-AFL player Sam Fisher granted bail on drug trafficking allegations

A former AFL player has been released on bail to live at a rehabilitation centre in the Macedon Ranges while he awaits trial for drug trafficking charges.

Sam Fisher, 39, who appeared via video link on Tuesday, was granted bail after he was arrested at his property in Sandringham in May.

The retired St Kilda defender, who played 228 games for the club over 12 years, is now facing drug-trafficking charges.

The two time best and fairest player is accused of sending a commercial quantity of ice and cocaine from Melbourne to Perth, hidden in whitegoods.

Police also allege they found more drugs in his Sandringham home when they raided the property in May.

A magistrate agreed to let Fisher move from Ravenhall Correctional Centre to a rehab facility, under strict conditions, so he can receive treatment for his drug addiction.

A doctor from the AFL Players Association provided a letter of support for him to be sent to rehab.

For the next 90 days, Fisher is not allowed to leave the facility in Woodend.

The magistrate warned him if he breaches any of his strict bail conditions, he would be sent back to prison.

The 39-year-old will return to court in September.
