Euthanasia bill passes lower house in Victoria

A vote to legalise euthanasia has passed the lower house in Victoria.

The assisted dying bill was approved in a conscience vote on a 47-37 margin after a 25-hour debate that began yesterday morning.

"This has been talked about for a very, very long time and I think we have brought a seriousness and respectfulness to this debate that I think is very important," Premier Daniel Andrews said outside parliament.

"And now we've got this done."

The bill was supported by a majority of Labor MPs, the Greens in parliament and a few Liberals.

But it still needs to be voted on in the upper house in a fortnight before euthanasia is legalised in the state.

Passing the Legislative Council could be a trickier proposition for assisted dying advocates. The upper chamber is deadlocked between left-leaning and right-leaning parties.

The proposed laws state terminally ill people with less than 12 months to live and who are suffering unbearable pain will be able to request lethal medication.

The Legislative Assembly discussed 140 amendments during the debate.
