The most expensive (and most affordable) Australian states for electricity bills
Households all across Australia are facing rising energy costs as the cost of living crunch spares no bill from a price hike.
The average electricity bill is costing Australians across the country a lot more these days – but where are homeowners and renters forking out the most?
The Australian Energy Regulator has listed the cheapest and most expensive states and territories for electricity in its 2023/2024 report.
AER's report covers NSW, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT, however Victoria, the Northern Territory and Western Australia are not included in the national energy customer framework.
The energy report revealed the median annual bill for households.

Queensland (Energex)
Queenslanders living in the state's south-east have the cheapest annual power bills at an average of $1617.
Energex services Queensland's south-east, which includes the state capital of Brisbane.
The bill is among the smallest portion of an average household's disposable income.
South-east Queenslanders paid slightly less this year compared to last, which was an average of $1778.
Queensland (Ergon Energy)
Queenslanders using Ergon Energy are paying a higher annual bill of around $2038 per year.
Ergon services all of the state except the south-east.
Prices for this provider jumped significantly this year compared to last year's average of $1776.
NSW (Ausgrid)
NSW residents using Ausgrid for their electricity are paying the least in the state for their power bills.
The average Ausgrid bill is about $1952 a year – making it the second cheapest under the national energy customer framework.
The 2023/24 financial year saw the average yearly power bill for Ausgrid jump by $45.
NSW (Endeavour Energy)
Those living in NSW who use the provider Endeavour Energy are paying an average of $2239 every year on their electricity bills.
This is about $102 more than the previous year.
NSW (Essential Energy)
Essential Energy customers in NSW are paying the most in the state at $2646 per year.
This is about $114 more than the previous year.
ACT
Canberrans are paying an average of $2118 per year on their electricity bills.
This was about $50 more annually compared to the 2022/2023 year.
South Australia
South Australians also paid a little more for electricity for the past financial year, with the average annual bill clocking in at $2231.
The median annual bill was about $181 more expensive than the year before.
Tasmania
Tasmanians are forking out quite a bit for their electricity bills.
The average annual energy spend was $2748 for Tassie households.
