Victorian fire burns near hospital

A large grass fire that burnt near a hospital in Melbourne's east is being treated as suspicious.

The fire at Studley Park in Kew burnt near a hospital, the Studley Park Boat House and some houses, Metropolitan Fire Brigade commander Brian Rogasch said.

No evacuations were necessary as the fire was burning away from buildings, Mr Rogasch said.

The fire burnt through five hectares of land and took over two hours to bring under control due to the area's rough terrain.

Fourteen fire trucks and 45 firefighters battled the blaze which broke out around 1.30pm Sunday.

MFB investigators said the blaze was suspicious and police were investigating.

Meanwhile, Country Fire Authority fire fighters have stopped the spread of a grass fire that was burning towards Victoria's Otway Ranges.

The CFA says residents in nearby Gellibrand are no longer under any threat but should continue to monitor the situation as conditions could change.

Firefighters continue to battle the Morwell open-cut mine fire which is not yet under control, after breaking out on February 9.

The CFA is hoping to declare it contained by the end of Monday, depending on weather conditions.

Even once contained, they expect smoke from the mine to continue for a few weeks in isolated areas.

Fire and smoke have forced many to leave Morwell.

Residents in Morwell South that are aged over 65 years, have pre-school aged children, pregnant women and anyone with a pre-existing heart or lung condition have also been advised to temporarily move from the area.

Chief Health Officer Rosemary Lester said the advice would be reviewed once the fire is under control.
