Electorate up for WA Senate election

There will be 28,000 more voters enrolled to vote in next month's rerun Senate election than in the original poll last September, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has announced

After enrolments closed last Friday a total of 1,480 303 West Australians were enrolled for the ballot on April 5, to be held after last year's lost votes debacle.

The new figure compares with the 1,452,272 voters who were enrolled in WA for the 2013 federal election.

Kathy Mitchell, the acting Australian Electoral Officer for Western Australia, said it is now important for all enrolled voters to make sure they vote.

"For voters who can't make it to a polling place on election day, early voting centres will become available from March 18 or you can apply online now for a postal vote," Ms Mitchell said.

The enrolled voters include 666 provisionally enrolled 17 year-olds who will turn 18 on or before election day. All these teenagers will be eligible to vote.

The 70 and over age bracket makes up the highest number of eligible voters, with 193,095 people, 13 per cent of the electorate.

The AEC later announced they will officially declare the candidates who have nominated for the Senate election at 12 noon on Friday.

Immediately after the nominations are declared, a random draw will be conducted to determine the order of grouped and ungrouped candidates on the Senate ballot paper.
