Sydney driver tells of carjacking horror

Phil Waltis is comforted by his wife, after an experience nothing short of terrifying.

The meatpacker, 57, was on his way to work this morning, when he was carjacked and forced to drive his attacker for 140km.

CCTV footage shows him moments before the carjacking, stopping at his local service station.

He wonders if it was here that his kidnapper spotted him.

Mr Waltis stopped at traffic lights at Pembroke Road in Leumeah. It was then a hooded man jumped into his passenger seat.

"Someone jumped in the car and then he just said 'drive'. That’s what happened, and I feared for my life," he said.

Behind the wheel of his wife's Nissan Micra, for more than an hour, from Campbelltown in Sydney's west, Mr Waltis was forced to drive for almost two hours, more than 140km.

Mr Waltis said the only way he could find to get through the experience was to focus on the road.

"I just focused on driving. I didn’t want to have eye contact with him, I just focused on driving.

"I didn’t know if he had a weapon or not. It’s still a blur, I’m still having flashbacks."

Eventually, Mr Waltis convinced the hooded man to allow him to pull over.

"I just said I need to go to the toilet (and) got out of the car."

Barely able to speak, Mr Waltis raced inside a cafe off the freeway.

While police are appealing for information, Mr Waltis just wishes now that he'd locked the doors to his car.
