Police have labelled three men who broke into an elderly couple's Melbourne home demanding drugs as "scum" after the two were left terrified by the ordeal.

The 93-year-old man and his 88-year-old wife were asleep when the intruders broke in, pinning the man down and demanding drugs and money on May 26.

They then punched the man in the face before leaving the room. He sustained injuries to his hands and face.

The trio then left the property by jumping over the front fence.

"They're just scum to have done that," Victoria Police chief commissioner Shane Patton said.

"I mean, they've got the wrong house but then to go on and hold and assault them, no need for it. "

The couple told 9News that they are trying to move on, but are too scared to leave their home.

Investigators have released an image of a vehicle seen loitering in the area immediately before the incident.

"I don't know what they are thinking when they go around [thinking] 'you're a nice little old lady, it's nice and easy for me thump you and not have any repercussions out of it," son-in-law Thomas told 9News.

Police have released a photo of a vehicle they think was involved in the incident, in hopes that someone will come forward.
