Eight killed, hundreds charged after Easter weekend 'carnage' on NSW roads

NSW Police will increase roadside drug testing following eight road deaths and hundreds of charges for drunk and drug drivers over the Easter long weekend.

Eight people were killed over the long weekend in "preventable" crashes, NSW Police said.

An alarming 863 drivers were allegedly caught driving under the influence or in possession of an illicit drug, NSW Police said.

Another 295 drivers were charged with drunk driving offences, while more than 5000 were hit with speeding charges.

A further 400 were charged with seatbelt and mobile phone offences.

"Unfortunately, due to the actions of a few, we've had more fatalities and serious injuries in a number of serious crashes that could have been prevented if the warning was heeded," Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden said.

"Again, we can't accept this irresponsible behaviour and the community shouldn't either.

"It is time we as a collective worked together to end this carnage on our roads.

"The community needs to be having those hard discussions at the dinner table ... you don't want to be the driver responsible for causing (the death) of another human being."

McFadden also said that police would increase their presence on the roads as drug use increases in the community.

In one incident on Good Friday, a Subaru was detected allegedly travelling 120km/h in a 70m/h zone on General Holmes Drive in Mascot at 11.30pm.

A pursuit was called when the car failed to stop for police.

The Subaru allegedly kept driving until it crashed into a bridge support pole.

The 17-year-old driver and three passengers were treated for minor injuries at the scene before being taken to hospital.

He was charged with several offences including driving recklessly or furiously, speeding in a dangerous manner and other offences relating to P1 driving rules.

He will appear in Downing Centre Local Court on May 16.

A motorcyclist was among those killed over the long weekend.

The rider clipped a Toyota Corolla, losing control when trying to overtake the car, sending him into a nearby power pole in Strathfield yesterday afternoon.

The man, 29, died at the scene.

A short time earlier, the motorcyclist had allegedly failed to pull over for police.

A pursuit did not ensue.

A critical incident has been launched by NSW Police into the incident.

The other road fatalities included a pedestrian, two other motorcyclists and two incidents involving cars.
