Drug-driver who killed unborn baby in crash sentenced to six years

A NSW drug-affected driver has been sentenced to six years’ jail after being found guilty of crashing into the car of a heavily pregnant woman and causing her to lose her baby.

Mother-to-be Jacqueline Sparks was driving along the Princes Highway in Dapto last month when Marco Paulo Silvestri’s car slammed into her.

The crash robbed her of baby Mia and her ability to ever have another child.

“It’s horrifying what has happened and it’s totally changed our lives,” Mrs Sparks said.

Marco Silvestri was under the influence of methamphetamines when the crash occurred and today was sentenced to a minimum six years behind bars.

“I would be surprised if any member of the community would be able to comprehend the sheer inadequacy of a maximum of seven years for extinguishing the life of an infant,” Justice Paul Conlon said after handing down the sentence.
