Police said it was reported he "failed to resurface".

Local police, surf lifesavers, Marine Rescue NSW and a rescue helicopter were searching for the man overnight.

Meanwhile a surfer has drowned on Christmas Day at Umina Beach on the NSW Central Coast.

He was seen by family in trouble outside the flagged area and despite being given CPR, couldn't be saved.
