Driverless electric bus to hit Perth roads this year in first Australian trial

Perth will be the first Australian city to trial a driverless bus, Western Australian transport minister Dean Nalder says.
The trial, expected to take place sometime this year, will involve a single electric shuttle bus equipped with “multi-sensor technology” operating along an undesignated route in the West Australian capital.
The bus will be entirely unmanned, relying instead on 3D perception to “map the environment, detect obstacles on the road and interpret traffic signs”.
It will be capable of carrying 15 passengers at a time, has a maximum speed of 45km/h and will travel at an average of 25km/h.
The Department of Transport said it is working closely with the Royal Automobile Club to ensure the bus complies with road and vehicle safety standards before the trial begins.
