Driver of car that smashed into Greenacre school facing new charges

The mother-of-four accused of crashing her Toyota Kluger 4WD into a school in Sydney’s south-west earlier this week, killing two and injuring several, is now facing two additional charges.

Maha Al-Shennag, 52, a parent and volunteer worker at Banksia Road Primary School, allegedly lost control of her vehicle about 9.45am on Tuesday.

The car then crashed through the weatherboard wall in an adjacent classroom, killing two eight-year-old boys. Seventeen students and one teacher were treated at the scene for various injuries.

Ms Al-Shennag was charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death.

This morning police laid additional charges of dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm and causing actual bodily harm by misconduct. Ms Al-Shennag’s licence has also been suspended.

The fresh charges relate to injuries received by three other students during the accident.

Two eight-year-old girls and a nine-year-old girl currently remain in Westmead Children’s Hospital. The nine-year-old is in a serious condition.

Ms Al-Shennag was granted conditional bail and will front Bankstown Local Court on November 29.

Police are investigating whether a dropped phone or drink bottle may have distracted her before the crash.
