Dog that recently gave birth shot during Sydney police opreration

A pet dog that recently gave birth is in a serious condition after police shot her during an operation in Sydney's west today.

Officers were called to an address at Kikori Crescent, Whalan following reports of a shooting about 11am today.

A 32-year-old man was found at the location with minor injuries to his leg and hand believed to be from a firearm.

He was taken to Nepean Hospital in a stable condition.

Following inquiries, officers established a perimeter at a second property in nearby Shalvey, after reports the gunman may be at the location.

Witnesses said there was a heavy police presence as armed officers approached the property and warned neighbours to leave immediately.

A man was arrested at the location, but has since been released without charge after an apparent case of mistaken identity.

A senior constable attending the scene, shot a dog that was believed to be aggressive towards officers.

Missy, the staffy-X had only given birth to a litter of puppies four days ago.

She survived the officer shooting her but remains in a serious condition.

A man was arrested a short time later after handing himself in at St Mary's Police Station.

The 33-year-old has been charged with shoot with intent to murder.

Officers returned to the Shalvey property with a search warrant and seized a shotgun.

The man was refused bail and is due to appear at Mount Druitt Local Court tomorrow.
