'I've got fire in the belly': Derryn Hinch plans to run for Victorian parliament

After an unsuccessful bid to return to the federal Senate last month, Derryn Hinch is now throwing his hat into the ring for a seat in Victoria's upper house.

The 78-year-old journalist, broadcaster and founder of Derryn Hinch's Justice Party confirmed the news via social media last night.

"I'm excited about it, I still got fire in the belly, still got things to do," he said.

A long-time advocate of victims of crime, Hinch's career has not been short of controversy.

In 1987, Hinch was fined $10,000 and was jailed for naming a paedophile priest while a trial was still pending.

In 2011, he was sentenced to five months of home detention for breaching suppression orders against the names of two sex offenders.

He was jailed for an additional 50 days in 2014 after refusing to pay a fine for revealing the criminal history of the man who killed Jill Meagher.

Hinch has been married five times.

In the 2018 state election, Hinch's Justice Party won three upper house seats although lost one weeks later when MP Catherine Cumming defected to sit as an independent.

He's confident of similar success again, after voters walked away from both major political parties at the federal election last month.

If Hinch does win a seat this November, he says integrity and transparency will be top of his to do list.

"We've still got a lot to do," he said.

"I want to get out there and keep fighting.

"We still have a lot of unfinished business in the great state of Victoria."
