Decryption laws committee powers on

Despite pressure from the government to wrap it up, a committee scrutinising encrypted messaging is pushing on with its public hearings.

The committee, through chair Andrew Hastie and deputy chair Anthony Byrne, has released a statement saying a hearing on Friday will go ahead as planned.

Another hearing flies in the face of Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, who want the proposed legislation to clear parliament before Christmas.

Mr Hastie and Mr Byrne say the committee is assessing when to release the report and it continues to operate in a "cooperative, bipartisan manner".

Before Mr Dutton had surgery on his arm, meaning he would miss parliament this week, he demanded the committee "accelerate" its findings.

While intelligence agencies are behind the urgent push, Labor says the committee should be given as much time as needed to get the laws right instead of doing a "botched job".
