Daylight saving has started in four states.

The clocks went forward at 2am on Sunday in NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.

While the good news is that summer is on the way, residents have lost an hour's sleep.

Smartphones and other gadgets with digital timekeepers should adjust automatically but time-keeping devices like wall clocks and microwaves will mostly need to be changed.

Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not have daylight saving.
