Firefighter taken to hospital after blaze at Sydney apartment building

A firefighter has been taken to hospital after helping an elderly couple trapped by a fire in their Sydney apartment building.

Crews from across the city rushed to the blaze on the 15th floor of an apartment building on Oxford Street in Darlinghurst near Sydney's CBD just after 5pm on Sunday.

Flames and smoke were seen coming from a balcony of the building.

Fire and Rescue NSW said the building was "heavily smoke logged" and while "numerous" people were evacuated, some occupants were being told to stay where they were because of the smoke. Nine

While some residents on other floors were told to stay inside their apartments because of the amount of smoke, "numerous" people were evacuated.

Two elderly people in a neighbouring unit to the blaze were joined by a firefighter, who remained with them until it was safe to get them out, Fire and Rescue NSW said.

That crew member was taken to hospital for "observation", with the couple also assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

More than 40 firefighters and 14 trucks were called the the fire by an automated alarm.

Oxford Street was closed in both directions between Flinders and Brisbane streets but reopened on Sunday night.
