Cumberland Highway closed after truck crash spills fuel over roadway

A major highway in Sydney’s west is closed after a truck crashed, spilling fuel over the road.

At 3.20am this morning a B-double truck hit traffic lights at the Sturt Street intersection of the Cumberland Highway near Smithfield.

The truck’s fuel tanks were ruptured on impact, causing fuel to spill onto the roadway.

NSW police have confirmed the driver of the truck managed to escape unharmed.

Hazmat crews are now on the scene to clean up the fuel spill as police man local diversions for motorists.

Northbound traffic is being diverted via Percival Road and Woodpark Road, while southbound traffic is being diverted via Woodpark Road, Fairfield Road and The Horsley Drive.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area with no forecast time for when the highway will be reopened.
