Crime scene declared after man dies at house fire in Melbourne's west

A man has died after being pulled from a large house fire in Melbourne's west.

Firefighters rushed to the single-storey house on Baird Street in Maidstone about 3.15am after several people reported seeing flames coming from the home.

The house was "ablaze" by the time firefighters arrived on scene and searched the house, finding an unresponsive man inside.

He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

The fire took 50 minutes for 30 firefighters to bring it under control and caused extensive damage to the house.

Police have ruled the property a crime scene and are investigating the cause of the fire with the help of an arson chemists and specialist fire investigators.
