Grandmother brutally bashed during home invasion in case of mistaken identity

A Perth grandmother has been left severely bruised after a violent home invasion, which police believe was a case of mistaken identity.

The 72-year-old, only wanting to be known as Jill, was confronted by the group around 6pm on Saturday at her home in the Rockingham suburb of Safety Bay.

She says the leader of the group tore down the locked screen door and threw her to the ground before kicking her.

“He was so so angry that he was strong, I couldn't have fought him off and he wouldn't take no for an answer. He kept saying ‘where are they?'" Jill said.

Police believe the gang was after the male residents living behind the grandmother's property, after an earlier confrontation.

Officers have one man in custody but need more information to catch the others, with at least four men involved.

“He would have known they weren’t here but that wasn't good enough and he was taking it out on me,” Jill said.

“I just go over and over and over it in my head every night when I go to bed, just relive it.

"There's no real excuse for what he did because it was just so irrational, there was no sense to it at all.”

The grandmother now wants other elderly residents to properly secure their homes.

“You hear on the news about the elderly people, I am probably more able than a lot of them but I am speaking for them,” she said.
