Western Australia to relax border controls on Queensland

Western Australia will reclassify Queensland as a "very low risk" jurisdiction from Friday, opening the prospect of freer travel between the states.

Mr McGowan said the health advice had supported the change after the currently "low risk" Queensland went 19 days with no new COVID-19 cases.

The very low risk rating means that arrivals from Queensland will not have to quarantine on arrival.

But they will need to complete a G2G pass and undergo a health screening when they enter WA.

South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory are WA's other very low-risk jurisdictions.

The change will be put in place from 12.01am on Friday.

However, for those looking to book flights, Mr McGowan said that if the health advice changed between now and then, he would not hesitate to reverse the decision.

However, Mr McGowan has stood firm on not releasing a roadmap to reopening WA to the rest of the country, saying he had announced the borders would come down next year.

He said when 80 per cent of over-12s in WA had been fully vaccinated, the government would have the "certainty" to make that decision.

Mr McGowan said without health advice to lower the risk status of NSW and Victoria, WA would remain closed even to vaccinated travellers from those states over Christmas.

He signalled further vaccine mandates would be announced in order to increase the jab take-up.

And he played down the effect of higher vaccination rates in NSW and Victoria, which is seeing an end to long-running lockdowns.

"We're a free society. They're not," he said.

"They're claiming it's freedom to gather in groups of 10, to have to wear masks outside.

"I'd much prefer our position to their position."

Western Australia recorded zero new COVID-19 cases today.
