Coronavirus restrictions to ease in Victoria from 6pm tonight

A raft of coronavirus restrictions will further ease in Victoria at 6pm as the state celebrates eliminating COVID-19 today.

The state marked 28 days of zero community cases today, officially making it COVID-free.

Masks

Masks will no longer be required to be worn in retail settings and will only be mandatory on public transport, inside rideshare vehicles and taxis, at airports, as well as in sensitive settings such as aged care facilities and hospitals.

Gatherings

Private gathering numbers will increase to 100 people, up from 30 visitors.

Public outdoor gatherings will double to 200 people.

Return to work

The cap for workers will be removed, enabling everyone to return to the office.

Public sector workers will also be required to return to work for at least three days a week under a new government mandate.

Dancefloors

The cap on dancefloors will be removed and indoor non-seated entertainment venues will have an extended capacity of 75 per cent.

Increased capacity has also been announced for sporting events, with 75 per cent of fans permitted at stadiums for the AFL.

"All of this is a reflection of the great work Victorians have done," Acting Premier James Merlino said.

"We know that the risk is far from over, but thanks to the incredible work of Victorians we are continuing to open up."

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan welcomed the announcement, which would see more fans flock to matches.

"As footy returned across the weekend you could really feel the excitement in the air throughout Melbourne," he said.

"It felt like the rhythm of the city had returned and the announcement today should only amplify this."

Entertainment venues

Density limits for venues under more restrictive settings, such as casinos and nightclubs, will also be brought in line with the hospitality sector, moving to the one person per two-square-metre rule.

The cap on gaming machines has been removed.

Sport and exercise

Limits on class sizes for outdoor and indoor physical recreation or fitness classes will be scrapped.

Indoor physical recreation and community sports facilities can operate subject to density limits of one person per two-square metres.

Unstaffed gyms will move to a density limit of one person per four-square-metres.

"These changes are another positive step in Victoria's social and economic recovery," Health Minister Martin Foley said.

Religion and ceremony

Weddings, funerals and religious gatherings can occur in commercial venues, with capacity limits depending on the type of venue.

If the events are held in a private home, the private gathering limit applies (100 visitors, the celebrant and a photographer are not counted).
