Four NSW schools hit with COVID-19 cases despite home learning

Positive COVID-19 cases have been detected in four schools across NSW.

Bondi Beach Public School is closed today for cleaning and contact tracing after a student tested positive to COVID-19, the Department of Education said in a statement.

Shortland Public School in Newcastle is also closed after a member of the school community contracted the virus.

Staff and students at both schools have been asked to self-isolate until they receive further advice.

Meanwhile, Kingswood Public School near Penrith is set to reopen today, along with Armidale Public School.

Both locations had COVID-positive cases at the site but they have done deep cleaning and contact tracing and authorities deemed it safe to return.

The vast majority of students in Greater Sydney and other locked down areas of NSW - including Armidale and Newcastle - are currently learning from home, with all but the children of essential workers strongly encouraged to stay at home.

But the highly infectious delta strain of COVID-19 has proved particularly hard to keep out of schools.

Queensland's most recent outbreak which sparked a snap lockdown - which the south-east of the state has only just emerged from - began after spreading from a high school student in Brisbane's western suburbs to a nearby state school and on to two inner-city Brisbane private high schools.
