School in hotspot suburb closed for COVID-19 cleaning

A school in one of Sydney's hotspot suburbs has been closed for deep cleaning after a positive case of COVID-19 was detected.

Kingswood Public School in Sydney's west will be closed today and contact tracing is underway after a member of the school community tested positive to the virus.

"All staff and students are asked to self-isolate until they receive further advice," a NSW Education spokesperson said.

"NSW Health has requested anyone who has been unwell or if you develop any symptoms such as a fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, loss of smell/taste, muscle/joint pains, diarrhoea, nausea/vomiting or extreme tiredness to be tested at one of the COVID-19 testing clinics."

NSW Education had earlier incorrectly named Kingswood High School as the site of the deep clean.

It comes as a new vaccine hub for Year 12 students opens its doors to thousands of students hoping to sit their HSC exams in the coming weeks.

Qudos Bank Arena at Sydney Olympic Park will begin vaccinating students from eight COVID-19 hotspots across Greater Sydney from 8am.

Year 12 students in the Blacktown, Campbelltown, Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland, Fairfield, Georges River, Liverpool and Parramatta LGAs are being offered Pfizer at the hub.

The Canterbury-Bankstown local government area continues to see the highest number of new cases, but a recent surge in infections in the Nepean has prompted a new hotspot declaration for 12 suburbs in the Penrith council area.

"The epicentre of the virus in Sydney still remains the Canterbury Bankstown local government area," Premier Gladys Berejiklian said today.

"We ask people in adjoining suburbs to especially be on high alert.

"You should not be going anywhere near those areas if you live outside those communities."
