South Australia expands border closure to all Victoria

South Australia has slammed its Victorian border shut after the latter's COVID-19 outbreak spread beyond metropolitan Melbourne.

Anybody entering South Australia from Victoria will have to quarantine for 14 days, and undergo mandatory COVID-19 testing.

Previously, South Australia had imposed this requirement only on people who had been to a Victorian hotspot.

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens warned South Australians in Victoria, or thinking of travelling there, to consider coming home.

"It is likely that early next week, we will make further changes requiring even returning South Australians to apply for a permit to cross the border," he said.

Chief Public Health Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier said the decision had been made after Victoria's exposure sites spread beyond Melbourne to the popular tourism spot Phillip Island.

Professor Spurrier said contact tracing would be used to track South Australians who had been to the island between July 12-15, and they would also be directed to quarantine.

"This is the highest risk we have experienced since the Victorian second wave," Professor Spurrier said.

South Australia recorded no new cases today, after nearly 9500 tests yesterday.

There are currently 14 cases active in the state, with none in hospital.

South Australia is also maintaining border restrictions with NSW, the ACT and Queensland.
