Coronavirus: Expert warns of second wave risk to Australia

A breakdown in communication around proper quarantine methods could be behind the recent spike in coronavirus cases across Victoria, according to a COVID-19 expert.

The recent outbreak in Victoria should mark as a warning to all Australians of the threat of a second wave hitting the nation, COVID-19 Coordination Commission board member Jane Halton said.

"The good news is this is a warning sign and I think now we have paid the right attention to it, I'm sure people will get that under control," Ms Halton told Today.

She said a breakdown in communication could be to blame for the increased infection rate around Victoria, which saw the state record its 20^th coronavirus related death yesterday.

"All the people working in those quarantine situations need to be properly trained in infection control, and it certainly looks like there has been a breakdown in those arrangements," Ms Halton said.

"We have to make sure it doesn't spread more broadly."

Ms Halton said this highlights the importance of testing and ensuring if you feel even slightly unwell to stay at home.

"Get tested and actually don't go to work, and certainly don't go to family gatherings."

Ms Halton said that while there is a global effort to develop a vaccine, emphasis needs to be placed on ensuring everyone practices individual safety measures to minimise the spread of infection.

"If everyone does the right thing, we can go back to some form of socialising, go back to the office if that's what we would like to do, but we have to keep observing these really simple rules," she said.

"I know people are bored with it, but it is so important."
