Connie Johnson remembered by hundreds of thousands on social media

Hundreds of thousands of people have paid tribute to Connie Johnson on social media, leaving words of love for the tireless campaigner for cancer research.

Ms Johnson, 40, died last night in a Canberra hospice surrounded by family after a battling cancer three times in her life.

Her brother, actor Samuel Johnson, led the first of the heartfelt messages on Facebook.

“I'm off to cuddle the fam and warmly embrace an exquisite whisky, in memory of my sister, who did so bloody well, from start to finish,” he wrote.

“Thanks for everything, Connie Cottonsocks. It was my pleasure to be your Sammy Seal.”

Samuel encouraged Connie’s supporters to leave tributes on www.loveforconnie.org  "so our family can keep them forever".

More than 250,000 people have since liked the post on Facebook, while more than 50,000 have left heartfelt comments.

Many well-wishers noted that although they didn’t know Ms Johnson, they felt immense love and support for her.

“I feel so silly crying for a woman I never met but feel so involved in her life,”  Facebook user Jessie Meldrum wrote.

“Con I fell in love with you… a mother to a child...a sister to her sister...a friend to a best friend...I never spoke to you or touched you...yet I love you,” Karen Louise wrote.

Thousands of other people also took to Twitter, using the hastag #ConnieJohnson and #LoveYourSister to remember Ms Johnson as an “extraordinarily brave fighter”.

Ms Johnson and her brother founded the Love Your Sister charity in 2012 to raise money for cancer research.

In the past five years, they have raised a staggering $5,605,000 for the cause.
