The Royal Australian Mint is releasing a series of new, limited-edition coins to coincide with the Commonwealth Games, and they’ll be released to the public – at least in part – in an unconventional way.

Three different $2 designs will be rolled out from July 15, with unique illustrations celebrating the dedication of Australian athletes.

The first coin will be released from Wednesday, July 15 and will feature a gymnastics design.

The second coin will highlight the 3x3 wheelchair basketball and will be available from Wednesday, July 22.

The third coin will feature a design to celebrate athletics and can be found from Wednesday, July 29.

“The coins celebrated the Commonwealth Games as one of the world’s largest international multi-sport events and recognised the achievements of our athletes,” Royal Australian Mint chief executive officer Emily Martin said.

The coins will be available to buy directly from the Mint for $20, but Woolworths shoppers who pay with cash in July will also have the opportunity to find the new coins in their change.

Woolworths has previously teamed up with the Royal Australian Mint to release other commemorative coins to celebrate Australian icons.

This includes designs featuring the Matildas, Vegemite, The Wiggles as well as previous Olympic and Commonwealth Games editions.
