For the first time in Coldplay's 27-year history, the British band has performed on-stage without their longtime bassist.

The Fix You hitmakers – comprising frontman Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland and pianist Will Champion – took to the stage for their Music of the Spheres world tour in Melbourne last night sans Guy Berryman.

Martin addressed the historic first before the band's set began at Marvel Stadium and apologised for Berryman's absence.

"It's a shame but we waited for the last minute to tell you that our beautiful bass player Guy is very, very sick and will not be [playing] for the first time," Martin told the crowd.

"I'm sorry for you guys down here who are waiting to see Guy. He's not going to be able to play today.

"We'll have a slightly different show and we'll do our best to make it amazing, and I know that it will be amazing because we're in Melbourne with all of you beautiful people."

The singer said Coldplay had brought in an understudy because Berryman was so sick he was vomiting.

Berryman was replaced by the band's music engineer and co-producer Bill Rahko, who wore an alien helmet during the performance.

It's believed to be the first time a member of Coldplay has been out sick since the band was formed in 1997.

Coldplay will play more sold-out shows in Melbourne tonight and on November 2 and 3, before heading to Sydney for dates at Accor Stadium between November 6-10.

The band will also head to New Zealand later in the month.
