Angus Taylor calls for 5 per cent deposit scheme to be for only Australian citizens

Coalition leader Angus Taylor today unveiled a new immigration policy that includes barring foreigners from the 5 per cent home deposit scheme.

The federal opposition leader was speaking on 2GB ahead of a speech in Sydney detailing the migration crackdown.

"Seriously, this is a scheme designed for Australians to get into a home. Young Aussie citizens," said Taylor of the deposit scheme.

"So let me give you a sneak preview of the speech I'm going to give at 11 o'clock today. I will say at that speech that we will restrict that program to Australian citizens."

The 5 per cent home deposit scheme was introduced by the Albanese government last year to help young first-time buyers purchase their first home.

The scheme allows all first home buyers in Australia purchase a home with only a 5 per cent deposit instead of the usual 20 per cent.

Taylor says the government erred by allowing permanent residents to access it.

Pauline Hanson's One Nation has been pushing for the 5 per cent home deposit scheme to be restricted to Australian citizens.

Other elements of Coalition's immigration policy include social media screenings on all migrant applications.

Migrants who breach Australian values would be deported under the plan.
