More arrests as climate change protesters block Brisbane's CBD

Climate change protesters have taken to the streets of Brisbane's CBD for the second time this week.

The Extinction Rebellion group, responsible for stopping traffic at one junction on Monday, are undertaking another peak-hour protest by blocking busy streets and intersections in Brisbane’s CBD.

Two protesters who glued themselves to the road have since been taken into custody.

Another man, who has previously been arrested four times for protesting, has also been taken into custody after police warned him not to attend.

One of the protesters arrested on Monday returned today, saying he is undeterred by the heavy police presence.

“There is likely going to be more arrests today,” he told Today.

“There is nothing left to do except rebellion. We are in the climate emergency.” 

The protester said he didn’t agree with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s comments that activists were turning people against their cause by initiating contestant disruptions in the CBD. 

“We are in a climate emergency and we are going to continue until we get some justice,” he said. 

Organisers said they will now make their way to the watch-house to support the people that have been taken into custody. 

Seven climate change protesters were arrested after blockades on Monday and charged with a mixture of offences including public nuisance, disobeying police move-on directions and impeding the flow of traffic.
