People carried out a dramatic citizen's arrest on the Hume Highway in New South Wales today.

Police claim a blue ute had been travelling south at high speed when it hit a guard rail on the Wingecarribee Bridge and collided with two dual-cab utes.

The blue ute burst into flames after the impact.

The driver of the burning car, a man aged in his 20s, was arrested at the scene after he was restrained by a group of civilians.

Witnesses said they had to tie his legs together to stop him running away.

He was taken to Liverpool Hospital for mandatory testing.

The occupants of the other two vehicles sustained minor injuries.
