Heroic citizen’s arrest as stolen car crashes into burning home

A 21-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences after allegedly crashing a stolen vehicle into a Sydney home early this morning while a family slept inside.

The crash happened at 12.30am on Carnarvon Crescent, Georges Hall.

The force of the crash was so intense the home burst into flames.

“I thought somebody had put a bomb inside my house,” Chris Al Cheikh, the home owner told 9News.

“I woke up to a loud bang. I heard my neighbour yelling ‘get out of the house, get out of the house”.

Neighbours said it took fire crews more than an hour to contain the blaze.

“There was a loud bang and then we heard screaming. Then the fire started in the house,” Sam Faraj told 9News.

Inspector Gary Margher from NSW Fire and Rescue said. “It was a very big impact. He is lucky he went directly under the window and didn’t take the corners of the brick work out otherwise the house would have collapsed at the front there.”

The driver of the vehicle attempted to leave the scene but Mr Al Cheikh’s son and a neighbour made a citizen’s arrest on the man, holding him until police arrived.

The driver was taken to Bankstown hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

He has been charged with negligent driving, driving in a dangerous manner, not holding a license and car theft.
