Adelaide council bins Christmas carol event because it’s “too religious”

Christmas in July has become a hot topic, thanks to a Mitcham Council decision to can the local carols event, amid suggestions it was "too religious" and only for Christians.

The move was met with such a fierce response, a backflip appears only days away.

Local MP Sam Duluk was leading the charge against the decision.

“Council has really lost the plot, political correctness, they want to destroy culture,” Mr Duluk said.

Even as the council made the decision - on Tuesday night - some feared a public backlash would follow. And it has.

“Let people sing carols, let people come together and Mitcham Council stop being the Grinch that's stealing Christmas,” Mr Duluk said.

One councillor who voted against the controversial move was Adriana Christopolous - today she was pushing for it to be overturned.

“I thought it was very premature for our council to look at cancelling the Christmas carols for 2019 without any consideration or consultation for our community,” Ms Christopolous said.

The Mayor told 9News the Council has "listened to the community" and scheduled a special meeting for Tuesday, where councillors will again vote on the controversial issue.

“I do think that the community have spoken very loudly,” Mayor Heather Holmes-Ross said.

“If the community overwhelmingly want this event to go forward then it will go forward.” The saga was unfolding at the same council that this month hiked its rates by more than any other in the state.

It has left ratepayers pondering what is going on.

“You pay your rates and you think they're going to have these community events for everybody to enjoy,” one rate payer said.
