A child has been left seriously injured after being kicked in the head by a horse at Centennial Park in Sydney's east.

A five-year-old boy was kicked in the head by a horse at around 1pm at the parklands, NSW Ambulance has confirmed.

Paramedics treated the child for a head injury at the scene before taking him to Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick in a serious, but stable condition, NSW Ambulance said.

Early reports said the child was with his family, who was standing near the horse when the incident happened.

NSW Police confirmed that they were on scene for crowd and traffic control.
