Charges dropped against former WA Premier

Insider trading charges against former West Australian premier Brian Burke and his stockbroker co-accused David Massey have been dropped by prosecutors.

The pair pleaded not guilty in June last year to four charges each regarding offences alleged to have occurred between April 12 and 26, 2006.

Mr Burke was accused of possessing information about listed fibre optic network provider Amcom Telecommunications that was not available to the general public when he bought, through Massey, 200,000 shares in the company.

Mr Massey was accused of aiding and abetting the offence.

A trial was scheduled from March 24 until April 17 this year.

But on Tuesday, prosecutors discontinued the charges.

Mr Burke said last year that he had not done anything wrong and was confident that justice would prevail.
