A homeowner is being hailed as a hero for helping a man who showed up to his door covered in blood after being stabbed in a suspected road rage altercation on the NSW Central Coast.

Police said a 42-year-old man was attacked by two other men in Kariong, near Gosford, about 8pm yesterday.

One of the men allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the alleged victim in the abdomen before they both left in a blue Holden Commodore sedan.

"It appears to be road-related, we're still trying to get to the bottom of the actual lead-up to the incident," NSW Police Acting Crime Manager Evan Davies said.

"At this stage, there's no indication that the parties are known to each other."

Davies thanked Liu for his help and said he was the reason the injured man was able to make it to the hospital alive.

Davies said the attack most likely took place while the 42-year-old driver was in the car.

Initial investigations suggest he was sitting in his car with the window rolled down when he was attacked, he said.

His silver hatchback has been seized by police.

The two men are yet to be found and police are asking anyone with dashcam footage to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
