Inside luxury $50,000 per month rehab for the stars

It seems like every day there's a new sex scandal in Hollywood, and every week a new celebrity checking themselves into rehab.

Most recently, Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey announced they were "seeking treatment" following allegations of sexual harassment and sexual assault.

But many of these Hollywood stars aren't checking themselves into any old facility, and instead are spending their days in luxurious accommodation.

So the question remains, is it high end help, or just a get out of jail free card?

Both Spacey and Weinstein have reportedly checked into high-end facility The Meadows, near Phoenix, Arizona.

It is a facility set over 14 acres in the Sonora Desert.

The Meadows website states it helps its patients deal with their issues through "expressive arts", yoga, meditation and  horseback riding.

Tiger Woods, Robbie Williams, Kate Moss, Selena Gomez and even Aussie swimmer Grant Hackett have all checked in for treatment over the years.

A stint at The Meadows doesn't come cheap, with reports a month's stay will set you back nearly $50,000 (US$37,00 US).

The Meadows is renowned for their treatment of "sex addiction".

But Somatic Psychologist and Certified Sex Therapist Dr Holly Richmond said sex addiction simply did not exist.

"Sex is something that's a part of ourselves, something we do, it's who we are," she said.

"It's not something we do or something we take (and) in that case the treatment is not going to be effective."

Dr Richmond was also sceptical about the lack of restrictions placed on patient access to the outside world.

"Harvey Weinstein was out to dinner in Arizona," she said.

"That doesn't feel appropriate to me at all in terms of what he's there for."

But there is evidence such treatment facilities can be successful for curbing drug and alcohol use.

Cliffside Malibu on the coast of California prides itself on being a luxury rehabilitation centre, with stunning ocean views, a heated pool, turn down service, and even organic meals prepared by a chef.

Lindsay Lohan, Heather Locklear and Scott Disick have all reportedly visited the facility for treatment.

A one-month stay in a private room reportedly costs $95,000 (US$73,000).

And then there’s the original – The Betty Ford Centre near Palm Springs was founded by the eponymous troubled wife of President Gerald Ford.

Unlike other clinics, the Betty Ford Centre has more basic facilities and is known for its strict rules.

Lindsay Lohan spent 90 days at the Betty Ford Centre following a court order.

During her time she was reportedly woken up every morning at 6.30am and assigned chores.

A one-month stay at the Betty Ford Centre reportedly costs around $40,000 (US$32,000).
