A Gold Coast tram security guard bashed unconscious says he is disgusted his attacker avoided jail time for the sickening attack.

Security cameras have captured the moment Mark Mason lashed out at Joel Broughton in an attempt to preempt a violent attack.

But his 29-year-old attacker kicks him to the ground, the security guard hitting his head on the concrete, knocked unconscious for a few seconds.

Broughton can be seen standing over the guard, delivering several punches while a second security watches on and does nothing.

"When I hit that concrete I was out, my head was split wide open, I was bleeding profusely, I was unconscious and then he laid the boots into me," Mr Mason said.

His assailant will not spend a day behind bars after being handed a fully-suspended six month jail term.

Broughton's lawyer argued Mr Mason started it by tackling the drunk and violent offender to the ground moments before the attack.

The court also heard there was little evidence Mr Mason was injured, despite revealing to 9NEWS a black eye, bloodied head and damaged jaw just days after the attack in November last year.

Six months on from the attack, Mr Mason said he is still suffering and has not been able to return to work.
