Ute explodes on Melbourne street after oxygen tank catches alight

A ute has exploded into flames on a residential street in Melbourne after an oxygen tank caught alight.

It is believed an oxygen tank in the rear of a ute exploded and the vehicle caught fire at the intersection of Bellbridge Drive and Aitken Avenue in Hoppers Crossing about 6.30pm.

A crowd had gathered to watch the ute burning before the explosion, which was filmed by several residents from different angles.

Police and emergency services were called to the scene working quickly to extinguish the fire and brought the incident under control.

The vehicle occupants were uninjured and the circumstances surrounding the incident are not deemed to be suspicious.
