Calls for better crowd control after Melbourne Cup horse death

The training stable of Melbourne Cup runner Araldo has called for better crowd control after the horse had to be put down after the race.

While on its way back to the stables after finishing seventh in the race, Araldo was spooked by a large Australia flag in the nearby crowd and lashed out, trapping one of its hind legs in a fence at the rose garden and shattering a pastern bone.

The stallion was treated at the track before being transported to Weribee Veterinary Hospital where scans showed the injury was inoperable, and the horse was euthanised.

Araldo was trained by Mike Moroney, and his racing manger Anthony Feroce told Fox Sports flags and other objects should not be waved in such close proximity to the horses.

"As someone said to me, it's not like the car racing," Mr Feroce said.

"These are animals and they spook."

Araldo's demise was not the only tragedy to occur at the track, with race favourite Admire Ratki collapsing and dying in its stall shortly after finishing last in the race.

The seven-year-old galloper, which won the Caulfield Cup in brilliant style last month, was second into the final straight but faded badly and went back through the field to finish last in the 22-horse race.

Chief Steward Terry Bailey said officials had vetted the horse after the race, as it was unusual for a favourite to come last.

"We were certainly on to it, but in the process of going back to the stalls, the horse passed away," Mr Bailey said.

"Our vets are on hand, and the horse will undergo an autopsy to find out what happened."

Japanese race officials and the horse's owner had been alerted to the death.
