The search for a missing swimmer has resumed at Byron Bay on the northern New South Wales coast.

Two people told police they saw a man struggling in the surf about 30 metres offshore of Main Beach at about 5.30pm.

A 22-year-old man tried to help the swimmer but was overwhelmed by the prevailing conditions.
