Sauvignon Blanc sold at BWS and Dan Murphy's recalled over undeclared sulphites

A popular white wine sold at BWS and Dan Murphy's nationally has been recalled due to containing an allergen not declared on the bottle's label.

All 2021 bottles of South Island White Mist Sauvignon Blanc 750ml are being recalled due to containing sulphites as an undeclared allergen.

According to the recall, consumers who have a sulphites allergy or intolerance "may have a reaction if the product is consumed".

Those who have purchased the product and have a sulphites or intolerance are advised not to drink the wine and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Under Australia's Food Standards Code, added sulphites must be declared on the label of a packaged food when present in concentrations of 10 mg/kg or more.

Sulphites occur naturally in some foods but are also widely used as an additive to prevent microbial spoilage.

"International scientific committees and FSANZ have thoroughly investigated the safety of sulphites and concluded that for most people sulphites are safe," Food Standards Australia and New Zealand notes on its website.

"However some sulphite-sensitive people, many of whom also have asthma, may react to sulphites with allergy-like symptoms."
