First total fire ban of season declared by NSW RFS

The NSW Rural Fire Service has issued the first total fire ban of the season.

Warm, dry and windy conditions have created a very high bushfire danger for north eastern parts of NSW today.

The RFS said in a tweet the fire ban has been declared for the far north coast of the state.

However, other regions, including North Coast, Greater Hunter, New England and Northern Slopes are also being warned to expect a "very high" danger.

It reminded people to work out their bushfire survival plan.

Last year 34 people were killed in bushfires across Australia, with thousands of homes and businesses destroyed.

Billions of animals also died.

Experts have warned upcoming rains may not be enough to avoid another catastrophic season.

While this year's season isn't expected to cause the same level of destruction, conditions are already seeing some places on high alert.

Climatologist from the Bureau of Meteorology, Greg Browning, said the severity of the season is mostly dependant on climate conditions.

He said this year Australia is in for a wetter-than-average spring – but that may not be enough to stop a dangerous blaze.
