A brand of capsules marketed at macho men and sold online to boost sex drive poses a serious health risk, Australian authorities warn.

Bushen Famous Men capsules and pills were found to contain an undeclared substance, sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, which can cause serious side effects.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) on Tuesday issued a safety alert saying the capsules should not be taken and their supply is illegal.

The top of the logo on the product packet says "Bushen Famous Macho Men Dedicated".

"Bushen Famous Men capsules have not been assessed by the TGA for quality, safety or efficacy as required under Australian legislation, and the place of manufacture is not approved by the TGA," said the watchdog in a statement.

"TGA investigations have shown that a number of people in Australia may have bought the product online."

They should stop taking the capsules, return any remaining ones to their local pharmacy and see their doctor if they have any concerns about using the product.

The TGA is working with the Australian Border Force to stop future shipments of the capsules from entering Australia.

The TGA repeated previous warnings that consumers should exercise extreme caution when buying medicines from unknown overseas internet sites.
