Woolworths store vandalised after controversial Australia Day decision

A Woolworths store in Brisbane has been vandalised after the supermarket giant's controversial decision to scrap the sale of Australia Day merchandise.

Emergency services were called to Woolworths Metro on Commercial Road in Teneriffe about 5.10am today after a flare allegedly set off a fire alarm.

There, they also found graffiti across the store.

The writing read: "5 days 26 Jan Aussie Oi Oi Woolies F--- U" and "Boycott Woolworths".

Firefighters extinguished the flare as police launched an investigation and appealed to the public for information.

The incident appeared to target Woolworths after it last week announced Australia Day merchandise would not be on its shelves due to a decline in interest around the items.

The decision sparked controversy, with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton suggesting that shoppers should boycott the supermarket giant.

Woolworths, however, said there was "no reason for vandalism".

"Thankfully no team members or customers were injured as this occurred before the store opened," a spokesperson said today.

"There's no reason for vandalism and we'll continue to liaise with Queensland Police."

Police have released CCTV footage of the alleged vandal graffitiing across the store.

As January 26 nears, Aldi said it would also no longer stock Australia Day items following Woolworths' decision.

Coles, however, said it would still supply a "small range" of themed items.
