Armed carjacker arrested after crashing stolen BMW

Video has been released of an armed carjacker weaving through traffic at high speed, before his dash from the law came to a crashing end.

The video, filmed from a Queensland Police helicopter, shows a stolen BMW colliding with another car at an intersection in Ipswich before the driver can be seen crawling out of the car window and attempting to flee on foot.

Police said he only made it a few hundred metres, before officers pounced and took him into custody.

The crime spree, which unfolded late yesterday afternoon, began around 30km away in the Brisbane suburb of Corinda when a 60-year-old man was forced out of his car at knifepoint.

He suffered minor cuts in the scuffle.

The carjacker is then believed to have been behind a foiled attempt to rob a Mercedes from a nearby Coles car park.

“The driver of the car managed to close the door and the man then fled the area,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

A 25-year-old New South Wales man will face court on a string of charges, including armed robbery, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and attempted robbery.
