Bourke Street rampage accused faces sixth murder charge

Dimitrious “Jimmy” Gargasoulas, the 26-year-old man accused of deliberately driving his car along a busy Melbourne street, has been hit with a raft of extra charges.

Police allege he deliberately mowed down pedestrians at lunchtime on January 20 this year, killing six people including a three-month-old boy and a 10-year-old girl, and injuring dozens of others.

Gargasoulas, of Windsor, was already charged with five counts of murder, and was today hit with a sixth murder charge and 28 counts of attempted murder and conduct endangering life.

He has also been charged with attempted murder, intentionally cause serious injury, robbery and unlawful imprisonment following two incidents in Windsor the same morning.

It’s alleged the 26-year-old was involved in a scuffle in the early hours of the morning with his brother, stabbing him before setting off on his alleged rampage.

He allegedly held his girlfriend captive in his car and drove around the St Kilda area, before she managed to escape on the Bolte Bridge.

Police allege Gargasoulas then drove to the CBD, where he performed burn-outs in front of Flinders Street Station before driving up Swanston Street and through the busy Bourke Street mall between Bourke and Queens Streets.

Thalia Hakin, 10; Jess Mudie, 22; Matthew Si, 33; Zachary Bryant, 3 months; a 25-year-old Japanese national; and Bhavita Patel, 33 lost their lives.

Zachary’s heartbroken parents this week spoke to A Current Affair about their devastation following their “perfect” son’s death.

“We were able to hold him again, properly, like holding a baby and having him in our arms and hug him one last time, even though we knew that we were holding a lifeless baby. But we knew he was ours and we had to say goodbye,” Zachary’s mother Nawwar said.

He was remanded to appear in court on December 15.
