Low-cost airline Bonza to launch in Australia next year

An independent low-cost airline will fight for business on busy domestic routes across the country next year with the promise of cheaper fares for Aussies.

New planes on Australian tarmacs will be purple and white, and the airline is called Bonza.

In a statement, Bonza said its launch from early next year will give Aussies "more travel choices and more affordable air travel" to destinations across the country.

Bonza founder and chief executive Tim Jordan has more than 25 years of aviation experience, according to the airline, including with low-cost carriers Cebu Pacific and Virgin Blue.

Backed by US private investment firm 777 Partners, Bonza will put a particular focus on routes into leisure destinations, Mr Jordan said.

"Bonza will play a leading role in Australia's post-pandemic economic recovery – creating jobs, stimulating travel and consumer spending and help regional communities, especially those that rely on tourism, get back on their feet," he said.

The airline will launch with an unspecified number of Boeing 737-8 aircraft.

Bonza's backers 777 Partners have also invested in Canadian independent low fare airline, Flair Airlines, and the Southeast Asian-based Value Alliance.

Managing Partner at 777 Partners Josh Wander said Australian skies were a "huge opportunity".

"We want to increase consumer choice and make travel more affordable and more accessible for all Australians."
