Bombers coach James Hird released from hospital after bicycle accident

James Hird has been released from hospital and is recovering at home after suffering a severe concussion in a bicycle accident yesterday.

Hird fell from his bike while riding home from Bombers training yesterday and even though he was wearing a helmet, he knocked himself out when his head hit the ground.

Speaking outside the family's home this morning, Tania Hird confirmed that her husband had escaped serious injury.

"There's no fractures which is fortunate," she said.

"He was very dopey (last night).. but it'll all be fine."

Essendon doctor Bruce Reid said Hird was taken by ambulance to hospital after the incident.

"James was very fortunate he was wearing a helmet which has braced his fall," Reid said yesterday.

"He has suffered severe concussion however X-rays have cleared him of any fractures.

"James will remain in hospital for ongoing observation and, following a review, we hope he will be discharged soon," Reid said.

The decision on whether he will coach this Friday night may be left until the last minute.

It's understood it was raining heavily about 5.30pm when Hird had his accident.

It's believed witnesses to his fall called the ambulance.
